New Discoveries of 2011

It’s been a very long while since I wrote about products that I’m using or indeed did a review. So I have put together a list of the new discoveries I have made so far this year and I’ll attempt to give a little mini review on each.

Firstly, having been a Bi-Facil user for many years I decided it was time to branch out and find a less expensive but just as effective replacement! I’m thrilled t say that I did so in the form of Bourjois Express Eye Make-up Remover. A hefty 200ml for £4.99 from Boots, it’s a great deal better value for money per ml than most others I’ve found. It sweeps effortlessly through e heavy eye make-up and doesn’t leave an oily residue or sting the eye. My only gripe is the lid and the nozzle. The hole doesn’t have a raised lip which would help to aim the product in one direction when poured out onto a cotton pad. This does tend to spurt out everywhere if you’re not controlling it.

At the end of January, I decided to treat myself to a facial and I chose to go and see the Decleor counter in Brent Cross as I knew the therapist there and trusted her to be careful with my temperamental skin. The facial itself was to die for and the clever Caroline also twigged from my back treatment that I was pregnant ( I was literally 4 weeks along!). I left there with  a new  Decleor Gel Cleanser and I picked up the special sale size which is 400ml for £21. Considering the 200ml is usually approx. £16 I think? I was and still am very happy with it. That’s 3 months ago and I’m only half way through it.

Decleor Cleanser

Since my pregnancy has progressed I have noticed some changes in my skin. Only really in these last 3 weeks but the difference is very noticeable, to me at least. My usually super oily skin has all of a sudden become normal. In fact, so much so that I’m almost bordering on sometimes feeling dry! All very new to me… But up until this revelation, I was really enjoying using the Clarins Toning Lotion with Iris. It really freshened up my skin without leaving it feeling tight. It also helped to control my oiliness throughout the day.

Toning Lotion

Another product I took with me from my facial is the Decleor Ylang Ylang Purifying Night Balm. I’m still using this even though my oiliness has gone (albeit I’m sure temporarily) but I still have congestion issues. This is a lovely balm which I’m using on a nightly basis to help draw out any impurities.

Ylang Ylang

Now I used Laura Mercier foundations for many years and I still rate them very highly, I do love it when I find something else that suits my skin type and tone. This latest discovery is Lancôme Teint Idole Silky Matte in Shade 010. When I was still suffering from extreme oiliness, I set this with a powder. Now, I don’t need to but I still like the smooth matte finish it gives me. Light to medium coverage, I can build this up pretty easily if I need to. I lightly sweep this on with a domed synthetic Sephora foundation brush.

Silky Matte

For those of you that follow the fabulous Pixiwoo ladies Sam and Nic will have no doubt at one point seen Nic using the Bourjois Mineral Radiance Pressed Powder more than once! I did and thought it looked so gorgeous on her, I wanted in! I an a good 2-3 shades at least lighter than Nic so I went for shade 04 Beige Medium. It doesn’t work for me as a blusher which is what I wanted it for. However, I have been using it as a very light bronzer, contour and also to warm up my neck which is a shade bluer than the rest of my body! Really sheer and easy to apply without streaking.

Mineral Radiance

In my need to replace another Laura Mercier Blusher, I stumbled across this L’Oreal True Match Blusher on one of my frequent trips to Boots. It has been one of my best finds, not only of the year so far but overall. Amazing pigment, great shade and matte! Woohoo! Shade 120 Sandalwood Pink is just a beautiful shade of peachy pink and brightens up my lacklustre winter complexion nicely. It comes with a nifty mirror inside, along with a brush that I wouldn’t use in a million years but hey. It has come in useful as a keyboard de fluffer!

True Match

Another hugely talked about product in the blogging/YouTube community is the Suqqu Eyebrow Liquid Pen. I have use mine to the very end and I’m currently waiting on my nest Selfridges trip where I’m going to stock up. It’s brilliant for me as it’s waterproof. Not that I swim in make-up, but I have such sparse brows with so many completely bare patches that I need something that’s going to fare well when only having skin to adhere to rather than hair. Shade wise, I use 01 which is called Green. Very misleading but what it does mean is that, with it;s very slightly green/grey undertone it completely cuts out the chances of it kicking out any redness which I hate in brows. A super fine tipped pen, it helps create the illusion of hair rather than a block of colour. I use this alongside my RMK brow pencil. Love it!

eyebrow_liquid_pen

Sometimes you find a product that you think, how come not ALL products are as good as this? Avon Supershock Gel Liner is one of those. I cannot fathom Avon can retail this at £6 and other brands can charge anything up to £20 for a liner than it no where near a patch on this? The most highly pigmented Black liner I’ve ever used. Excellent for the waterline as it’s so long lasting. This is one of those products I’ve bought back ups of, both for myself and for my kit. There are other shades available, I just haven’t tried them yet.

Avon Supershock

On one of my many Boots jaunts, I found myself looking for a pink Lip Pencil. After swatching my hands to oblivion, I feel for the Rimmel Exaggerate Automatic Lip Liner in East end Snob. Of which I am neither. But this has the longevity of a tattoo! I’m currently enjoying using this all over my lips and then slicking on some lip balm. (Apology for the lack of photo and the use of stock photos on all the others, I’m currently sans camera which is a bit lame)

Lastly, my hair loves.

If you have never seen a photo of my, I have super curly, dry hair. Over a year ago, I discovered the joys of a system called No-Poo. It sounds rather rude but it in fact means that I no longer use Shampoo in my hair. Shampoo often contains drying detergent-like ingredients which for curly hair are a real no no. So I have switched to using solely products that are SLF and Silicon Free. By removing Silicon from the equation, I have no product build up in my hair. Therefore, I have nothing that requires shampoo to remove.

My conditioner is the Naked Hydrating Conditioner for Normal to dry hair. I simply wet my hair and take this through with a wide tooth comb, leave for 3 minutes and rinse. I also do a ‘Co-wash’ with this which means I use a small amount and massage through as if it were shampoo, rinse and then use it again to condition. They do also have a Curly hair shampoo and conditioner range but I can never find it in my beloved Boots?!

naked

My styling product is the Naked Gorgeous Curls Taming Cream that I mix in with one pump of Naked Extra Shiny Finishing Serum. These 2 products combined give me a better curl and finish than my old love Frizz-ease. Plus they last 5 times as long and are almost always on some kind of offer.

Phew. This has been one looong post! Thank-you for reading it to the end!

Any questions or comments, please feel free.

Face Atelier Update

Hi All
Face Atelier
I posted just over a month ago about the Face Atelier foundation and my thoughts on it. You can read the full post here
What I wanted to briefly touch on again was how I made it work even better for me.
I mentioned that I found the Ivory shade a tad too yellow for me. This was when I was applying it with a small synthetic Kabuki brush. Even with a hefty amount of buffing, I was still now getting it to look as natural as I’d have liked.  That’s not to say that those who like a slightly fuller coverage wouldn’t love it, I just don’t feel comfortable in it.
Then, one frantic afternoon when I had ended up crashing at my sisters the night before and had to race home with no make-up on for an appointment. I was, as I often am, in a crazy rush and just did not have time to put on a full face of make-up. If’ I’d have gone for the foundation as I was applying it before, it would have been such a full, even base, I’d have had to do bronzer, blusher, eyes, etc just to balance it out.
So, I grabbed my concealer, swept a dash under my eyes, grabbed my Clarins Ultra Matte balancing lotion and my Face Atelier Foundation in Ivory and put a blob of each on my hand, mixed in and Voila! The perfect base! It gave me just enough coverage, still enough to even me out but a couple of blemishes still showed through. To me that’s a good thing as it means that it isn’t too opaque and, to be honest it doesn’t take me more than a minute to take some Secret Camouflage over my spots.
It’s also a winner for me as I found the dewiness of the Foundation on it’s own a bit too dewy for me, so the mattifying lotion gave me a great combination finish. A slick of Une cream blusher and Rimmel Volume Flash and off I popped. I was only going to get my legs waxed so in all truthfulness, I needn’t have bothered but I like to make an effort Winking smile
have you ever ‘customised’ something and improved it for the better?

My Current Favourites- November

Hi All,
I thought I’d give you a run down on my current favourites, not necessarily just for November but for the past few months. I do chop and change as and when needed, especially with skincare.
I’m of the school of thought that what works for your skin one day may not be the best for your skin the following week. So I try to have a few different textures and lotions that I can go to that suit my skin for how it’s feeling on that day/night.
I’m going to start with skincare today-
I like to remove my eye make-up before I cleanse my skin. Even though many of my cleansers can remove mascara, I don’t like the idea of grinding the eye make-up into my pores in the process. So recently I revisited an old favourite, Lancôme Bi-Facil.
bi-facil
The famous 2 tone blue remover is not the cheapest on the market at approximately £19.50 for 125ml however, it is one of the most effective. It’s clearly oil-based and therefore cuts through the long lasting layers and layers and layers of liner and mascara that I wear. 2 cotton pads held over my eyes and held for 20 seconds takes it all off.
When it comes to cleansers, I have 2 on the go. I’ve been a fan of the Mir Skincare Cleansing Gel for a while now and this is still my favourite. Quick, gentle, not fussy and takes it all off. For days when I feel like my skin could benefit from a ‘squeakier’ clean, I use my Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel. This leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean but occasionally it can feel a tad tight, so I don’t use it every day, only as and when.
dermalogica
I have 2 exfoliators that I keep on my shelf. The first is one that I’ve been using for 6 years and is relatively unheard of (not the brand just the product) and it’s Laura Mercier Face Polish. A gentle scrub that I adore! Not all her skincare is my preference but this I love. A nice balanced mix of cleansing and hydrating ingredients, a gentle violet scent and a good amount of beads in to get a good clean feeling. My husband also finds that this gives him a good clean shave if he uses it before. £28 but it does last a long time.
face polish
If I want to use an exfoliating mask as opposed to a manual scrub I use my Dermalogica Gentle Cream Exfoliant as a mask. This is a non-abrasive hydroxy acid exfoliation treatment that leaves my skin smoother and brighter.
Both of these exfoliators however see a lot less action since I started my love affair with my Clarisonic Plus. I’ve written reviews on this before but it deserves another mention. I went away for a week last month and forgot to take it with me and boy did my skin thank me when I returned and used it for the first time. I really can’t see myself being without this in the future.
PlusLeanBubble
I like to refresh my skin with a Rose Water Toner and my one for use at home is again by Mir and is the Skin Refresher. This leaves my skin feeling hydrated rather than ‘cleansed’ because that’s the job of my cleanser not my toner. It’s not something  I use everyday, just if I feel I need a little refresh and moisture boost.
My current favourite moisturiser is the Clarins Ultra Matte Rebalancing Lotion. I’m not using this for it’s mattifying ingredients as they don’t work for me, I do however love the texture, the hydration boost my skin gets and how well it works under my make-up.
Clarins Ultra Matte Rebalancing Lotion
I’m also still using my Mir Moisturising Lotion and this is what I use if my skin isn’t feeling like it’s usual oily mess. This gives me a little more comfort without overload. I can also use this around my eyes with no ill effects.
Revive
When I do need to use a product around my eyes, I have a Revive Les Yeux Presse eye cream that I was given a while back. This was an actual gift rather than a PR sent product. I’ve got out of the habit of regularly using it but, having just had another peak at the price and the ingredients, I should probably use it more often!
I’m currently internet stalking the Alpha-H skincare line and I think I’ll delve into that range soon.
Are there any skincare gems that you just can’t put down at the moment?

Cor, I love a bargain me.

Hi Girls,

Is it just me, or does the thought of collecting points on your Boots card sent you into a small frenzy? I know for a fact there are others who share my joy so don’t be shy.

What tips me over the edge is when they add into that, the notorious £5 off on No7 vouchers. I get a little bit sweaty just at the thought.

Imagine my horror when I went in to do a big old stock up on some bits and pieces for my kit and I realised that I didn’t have a voucher! I’m not quite sure how I let that one slip through my fingers but I did. (I have a suspicion I did have one at one point and spent it the week prior, the excitement may have caused temporary memory loss).

My basket was filled with bits and pieces and I get to the till and realise I don’t have a voucher. The lovely lady saw my panic, spied my wild eyes and told me not to panic. “Let’s work this out together” she said. I loved her from that moment on.

In my basket I had – 2 sets of Ardell False Lashes (my brand of choice) which were on offer at the time for 2 for £8 (as oppsed to £5 each) I took the Babies (left) and the 109′s (right).
Ardell BabiesArdell 109

I had picked up a Bourjois Eyeshadow in a delicious Brown shot with Purple shade called Brun Sompteux #74 which is £5.99. I will be using this soon in an EOTD. All I can say is it is delish and the first time I have enjoyed using a brown eyeshadow in quite a while!
Brun
Having tried out a new Face Atelier Foundation the day before and realising I needed a new translucent setting powder, I decided to give the No17 Shine Control Loose Powder a try. I thought, my skin still behaves as if it were a teenager, so I’m going to treat it like one!  So far, so good. Again, a review to come after a few more days of testing. This sells for £5.49
17 powder
I then decided to repurchase some of the No7 brushes I was sent a while back for review purposes. See the original review here. I wasn’t too keen on a few of them but the ones I did like, I found were very good value and good extra back-up brushes for my kit.

First up is the Foundation Brush. It’s a good size, easy to use brush that I use to apply cream foundation before I blend it in with a flat top Kabuki. Retails at £12.

I then grabbed the Concealer Brush  which I love for buffing in concealer under the eye. This is £7.50

I’d heard Pixiwoo talk about the Eyeshadow Blend and Contour brush as being a good dupe for the famous Mac 217. I have not only some of the Mac versions but also the Sigma version. All 3 are fab, not identical and therefore really useful for slightly different techniques. And at £6.50, you can’t go wrong. I can’t have enough of these in my kit.

Finally I picked up the Smokey Eyeliner Brush which I tested out today for the first time. I don’t think I used it to it’s full potential so I’ll give it a few more goes. £6.50.

So, my total spend should have been – £51.98.

The aforementioned lovely lady at the till put the Ardell Lashes through first and with that purchase, I got my first voucher! My Bourjois Eyeshadow got me my second one and the 17 Powder got me a 3rd.
Then my Blend and Contour Brush was reduced to £1.50, my Concealer brush to £2.50, my foundation brush to £7 (and I think I may have got another voucher with that too) and my smoky liner brush was £1.50.
So what I ACTUALLY spent was £31.98. Lovely! Thanks Boots!

And a huge thanks to the lovely Sophie at the till and the patient shoppers behind me as I paid for each of my transactions one by one by card…!

Reviews on a few of these items to follow soon.

Have you bought anything amazing with your Boots vouchers?

Ps. There’s still time to vote for me in the Annual Wedding Ideas Awards in the Special Touches category as Make-up by Katy. It’d make my day! xx

Review–Face Atelier Foundation

Hi Girls,Face Atelier

One of the wonderful things about social media such as Twitter and Facebook is that I can eavesdrop in to other peoples conversations and gleam some great product recommendations! This has happed with 2 lovely Beauty Bloggers  Amanda at Beauty Blogging Blonde and also Rebecca at Le Salon de Beaute on Twitter so I decided to jump in on the trend.

In my eternal quest for perfect skin I decided to give the Ultra Pro Foundation from Face Atelier a try. I picked mine up in the form of £1 samples from a great UK bases site called Coco Beau. I also ordered a new large size of the famous Embryolisse for my kit. Horrific on me but my for drier skinned clients, it’s a miracle product!

Here’s what Coco Beau have to say about the foundation –

Ultra Foundation is the heart and soul of FACE atelier – an innovative approach to foundation that allows you to be in control. With a growing cult-following, Ultra Foundation is a silicone-based emulsion that floats on top of the skin, doesn’t crease or flake, and lasts all day long. Hydrating yet oil-free, it obscures tiny lines and pores to ensure a smooth finish. No primer needed! It’s built into Ultra Foundation, thanks to the super sophisticated, silicone-based formula. Another bonus – it sets without powder, preserving the youthful, dewy finish.

Sounds great. Do  I want to be in control of my foundation? Yes. Do I want it to last all day long? Yes. Hydrating yet oil-free? Super! It obscures tiny lines and pores, both of which I have. Here’s the biggy for me. It sets without the need for powder. Hmmm, I was a bit reluctant to believe that one without trying it. My skin is a notorious oil warning zone.

“Face Atelier Foundation, meet my Sebaceous Glands. You two play nicely.” I know who my money is on!

The colour choice is good. 10 shades ranging from Porcelain to Cocoa and if you still can’t find your shade, then they have 3 adjusters. Zero Minus – A brightening White,  Zero Plus – A deepening, milk chocolate brown and finally Warmth – A warming Rich terracotta.

I selected 2 samples – #1 Porcelain- Pale and interesting Porcelain with pinky undertones and #2 Ivory- A creamy Ivory

Both are beautiful shades, I particularly like the pinky tone that Porcelain has as too often, the lightest shade in a brand is far too yellow for me.

Here’s what Face Atelier have to say about the texture -

The silicone molecule is bigger than the human pore, allowing Ultra Foundation to form a lightweight, breathable second skin that is both moisture and oil resistant. It is truly non-comedogenic and is ideal for troubled or mature skin.
Ultra Foundation’s top-secret formulation creates an optical blurring effect that diminishes fine lines and wrinkles and gives the illusion of a smoother, more uniform and naturally dewy finish.

I do like the sound of optical blurring, because, short of smearing Vaseline in everyone’s eyeballs, there will always be issues on my skin that I’d rather weren’t there.

So how did I find it?

On first try, I loved the colours of both of them. I tried the Porcelain on it’s own and it’s just a tad to light and cool for me. I can make it work to an extent with my bronzer but that is also slightly cool toned so the effect was still not 100% correct.

The Ivory on it’s own at first look was ok, but within an hour had definitely kicked out way too much yellow.

Face Atelier

In the end, I used up the rest of the samples by mixing 1:1 of each and guess what? Perfect. Typical! Now, I could have invested in either of the adjusters but I didn’t need to deepen or lighten the shades at all. And I wouldn’t want to add a terracotta base to the porcelain as I feel that would have added too much red. So, a combo of  Porcelain and Ivory it is then!

IMG_3842

Texture wise, this foundation is powerful stuff! I’m not a fan of full coverage, or even medium-full. I really like my skin to look like skin. So I had to use this with a very light hand!

I have tried using both a flat top Kabuki brush and a sponge and in all honesty, I like them both but I prefer to use them together! The brush, when used alone can tend to leave too much visible on the skin for my taste. I don’t like to use foundation to look all one flat shade, I still like a bit of ‘movement’ so I am applying it first with a brush and then buffing over with a sponge. Or even the other way round- smoothing over a sheer layer with a sponge and then adding a tad more in certain areas to build coverage where needed.

IMG_3840

What I do love about this foundation is the longevity of it. Yes, it lasts all day. No wearing or sinking into the skin.

Did it stay matte without powder? No. Not that I expected it to. For a normal or drier skin, I think the slight dewiness will be a goog thing. My sebaceous glands were the victor in this battle. However, even though I got shiny, the make-up DID NOT MOVE. Oiliness can cause foundation to slide but this gripped on to my skin like velcro!

The end result is that I have since purchased the full sizes of both these shades. They retail from Coco Beau at £32 for 30ml, so they’re certainly not cheap! I’m hoping that soon, a pro discount becomes available so I can purchase there for my kit at a better rate. I think these would be a valuable addition. I may start off with a sample of each and see how I get on using them on others.

Lastly, a ‘highly commended’ for Coco Beau. I ordered the full sizes yesterday and they arrived today. All beautifully packaged. Thank-you!

I hope this has been helpful.

Yours,  as ever

Rave Review! Une Beauty Mineral Powder

Hi Girls,

Well, this post is a happy one! I have found a product that I really like, nay, LOVE! And bless my soul if it isn’t a high street brand. Yippee!

So , I’m a big mineral powder fan. It isn’t suitable for everyone but it works a dream for me and my ‘prone to oiliness’ skin (when I say prone, I mean over run by). I know not everyone will love it but it’s a cheaper option for those still considering it and not wanting to splash the cash if unsure.

mineral

The pots are 4.5 grams or 0.15oz and cost a reasonable £9.99. Considering that my last mineral powder was Laura Mercier and although it was larger at 9.5g, it cost £30. So this is a much better price per gram option for me.

Especially as I like to have 2 shades of my foundation. I fluctuate by at least 1/2 shades on a daily basis, depending on whether I have any fake tan on by body. I have a fear of my head and body looking different colours, I may have mentioned that before?!

The shades I use are MO1, the lightest shade and MO5 the 3rd shade in. I have found that this gives me the best mixing option and the shade in between is a drop too yellow for me.

One of the common complaints I have heard about mineral powders is the shimmer effect or the metallic finish left on the skin. I have to say that I don’t get that with these at all. On the first stroke onto the skin, there is a faint ashy residue but that gets buffed away within seconds. I tend to dab my brush into the lighter shade and then slightly into the darker shade and use the palm of my hand as a mixing tray. I use my beloved Sephora Mineral brush that I reviewed here. I’ve also forgone my usual extra step of eyeshadow base and have instead been buffing this over my eyelids to even out the tone.

The lightest shade I was given as part of a blogger event back in the summer, I wrote about a few more of the other products in various posts here.

I haven’t swatched these as I can’t manage to capture the finish in a swatch without loading it on and that doesn’t reflect the great finish that it has.

However, if you’d like to see it on my skin, I was wearing it in my Eyebrow Pencil post. I’m not posting the picture up again, once was more than enough!

I hope this has been helpful. Une Make-up is available to buy from Boots and Superdrug.

Eyebrow Stencils – When they go wrong!

Hi Girls,

I’m quite into eyebrows. I may have mentioned them before a few times in recent posts?

So, when I saw these eyebrow transfers being used in a you tube video, I thought I’d have a go myself. Not that I have issues drawing mine in freehand but I wondered whether I was missing a trick and if there was another brow shape out there for me…

The short answer to that is no.

Firstly, let me take you through the items I received in my kit. This was ordered from a US company called Eyebrowz.com and yes, that is a ‘Z’ there on the end… I found the website easy to navigate, however, I know already which eyebrow shape suits me best and I selected similar shapes. Someone who isn’t as sure as me will probably find it quite overwhelming.

I selected 2 different eyebrow powder shades to try, Light Brown on the left and Soft Charcoal on the right.
IMG_3809
As you can see from the swatches, the Light Brown has a HUGE amount of red in and I’d not be able to use this on myself or the majority of my clients so this is going into my ‘unused drawer’. The  Soft Charcoal however is a reasonable warm ash toned grey which I know defeats the point of being ash toned, what I mean is, it’s not a blue toned grey. Because that would be silly.
IMG_3831 Here are the applicators that they send through with the pack. 2 dual tipped sponges and 2 ridiculous excuses for brow bristle brushes.
IMG_3811
I chose the deal which allows you to select your own 4 shapes. To explain more clearly, all these stencils are based around celebrities.  Some celebrities have 3 or 4 stencils each. This is because they are designed around different photos of the celebs, and brow trends and shapes change through the years.
IMG_3818

First up in the JE 1 – This is (clearly very loosely) based on Jennifer Anniston in the below picture.IMG_3820JE1
Second is the PA1 – Inspired by the picture of Linda Evangelista below. Really?…IMG_3821lindae
Up next is the Cz3 – The delightful Catherine Zeta Jones has leant her brows as inspiration for this stencil. IMG_3822 catherine2

And finally,  the VA1 – Vanessa Williams, looking very lovely here in this picture. IMG_3823vaness

So, the theory is that the stencil lays over your brow and you apply the brow powder through it, using either the brush or the sponge applicator. My biggest issue? Holding the stencil on. They do sell a stencil holder, which is essentially a massive hair band that you place around your head and then slot the stencil in. I scoffed at that! Bah! However, it turns out that I probably could have done with it as they are really BLOODY DIFFICULT to hold in place! So, I had to invent my own method – Micropore!
But, this still didn’t work. The problem is, our faces are 3 dimensional, so sticking/holding the stencil down at the sides still leaves the top and bottom unstuck. And if the stencil isn’t laying 100% flush against the skin, it is impossible to create a sharp edge. I found that , as I have a very deep set eye, I couldn’t get the bottom of the stencil to stay down so my lower brow line was always fuzzy. This could be cleaned up by using a concealer brush and then a brow pencil, but then I may as well have drawn it on free hand non?
And what happens if you put it in the wrong place?! I demonstrated this for that exact purpose. I think we can safely say that you’d be able to tell if your placement is off. Oh, and this is the Jennifer Anniston brow, an uncanny similarity eh?
IMG_3827

I spent a frustrating yet hilarious hour trying these out and I’ve come to the conclusion that they are not for me! However, they cost me approx £22 so I really don’t want them go to waste. I will get some use out of the Soft Charcoal powder as I very much like the colour and texture.

I think I’ve found the perfect use for them. Fetching I think you’ll agree? (And this is my brow drawn on freehand. So much better and no need for sticky tape!)

IMG_3830
And just in case that last image didn’t disturb you enough, have this one too. My pleasure!
IMG_3829
And may I suggest that if you try this at home, don’t let your husband surprise you by coming home early. That’s a conversation I never thought I’d have!
Until next time,
Colonel Sanders

What I’m loving from Benefit

Hi Girls,
The next in the series of ‘What I’m loving’ is all about Benefit.
First up, my beloved Babe Cake. Sadly they recently discontinued this and I’m devastated. I used this so regularly and found it to be one of the best cake liners around. Great, dense pigment, long lasting (so many cake liners drop when they dry, this one NEVER does) and great value. Plus, the brown side, contrary to how it looks in this photo is a lovely deep brown, not as red as it looks. If any of your local Benefit counters still have any, snap one up.
babe cake
I reviewed and swatched these on my blog a while back. You can see the selection of all the shades I have here. These have become invaluable to me as I get to know them and play with them and I’ve found that I reach for them in 90% of my work these days. I’d like to see more shades from the Benefit team in these. Pretty please?!
creaseless creams
The talent brush is a great multi-functional brush for a good price. I use it from under eye concealing. It can also be used with the creaseless creams, for an eye base, or just about any cream product. Plus, I like that it had a nice short handle for travel.
talent brush
What I’d like to see from Benefit is a selection of specific Gel Liners. I know the Creaseless Creams are supposed to multi task but the only colours even slightly deep enough are Strut and Towne Car which I feel are still not dense enough. I’d like to see the same technology used to create an amazing range to rival Bobbi.  Imagine a Dark Black/Red hybrid as a gel liner?!
What do you love from Benefit?

Review – Clarins Ultra Matte Rebalancing Lotion

Hi Girls,

A couple of weeks ago I posted about my epic search for a great mattifying, rebalancing moisturiser for my skin here.

I have a few different ones to try and I’m giving them all a decent run of at least a couple of weeks.

The first one I decided to test run was the Clarins Ultra Matte rebalancing lotion.

Clarins Ultra Matte Rebalancing Lotion I was tempted for many reasons. Firstly, I liked the fact that it’s specifically for oily skin. Don’t go lumping me in with a combination skin, we are not the same beings.  As I’ve said before, my oiliness is epic and not contained to my t-zone. Also, the name. Ultra to me means ‘I’m going to work extra hard!’ and rebalancing sounds intriguing..Plus, the colours psychologically lure me in with their fresh clean-ness…

On further discussion with a lovely Clarins lady, she explained that this is not only an instant fix for oiliness but works also as a long term treatment to ‘rebalance the skin…hence the name. Doh!

Clarins say it is – “The ideal daily moisturiser for oily skin. Its reinforced anti-shine action leaves skin matte upon application and promotes very soft skin. It continuously purifies by working at the source of oil production making the skin clearer, comforted and with reduced redness.”

Ingredients are –

Chrysin: reduces the number of sebum-producing cells.
-White Dead Nettle, Alpine Willow Herb, Zinc and Vitamin B6: regulate oil production, refine skin texture and tighten pores.
-Lantana extract: purifies and gently exfoliates.
-Ultra-fine powders: absorb excess oil and reduce shine.
-Green Algae and Linden: moisturise, reduce redness and soothe.

I think this all sounds just up my street. So how have I found it?

I have loved the feel of it on my skin. My make-up has been working really well on top of it. Has it instantly mattified? Sort of…I’m not oily straight after washing my face though so there’s nothing to soak up. It doesn’t however, leave me looking greasy and shiny. It has a lovely clean scent, not an artificial or anti-bacterial scent. More cut grass.

Has it kept the oil down throughout the day? Sadly not. I’m still having to constantly blot and re-apply powder, up to as much as 5/6 times a day.

I’m wondering if it didn’t give it enough time? Maybe, after the entire experiment is over, I can re-visit this and give it 4-6 weeks.

So, I’m sad to say, this hasn’t been my saviour, although I’ve really enjoyed using it. Bye bye my ultra-matte pal. Back in the draw you go :(

Review – Avon Ideal Shade Cream-to-Powder Foundation

Hi Girls,

If you remember from my previous post on my Mum’s new venture into the world of being an Avon Lady, I was pretty struck down by the quality and performance of their daily self tanning moisturising lotion. I decided to bite the bullet and place an order for a few more pieces, including some make-up anC-t-P Foundationd skincare.

First up for review is the Cream-to-Powder Foundation. I thought I’d give this a try as I had a personal recommendation from my good friend and fellow Make-up artist and blogger Rebecca over at Le Salon de  Beaute. It was a base she pulled out when she wanted to create a more flawless look and she always got complemented on it. This ticked many boxes for me so far! I had a read of the blurb and decided that I very much liked the sound of an oil-free cream texture that dries to a matte powdered finish.

Now, my skin is almost consistently playing up. Someone forgot to tell my skin that it’s no longer a teenager. Yet, here I am, almost 32 and I’m as oily as ever.

Choosing the shade can be tricky. I’d definitely say that the actual brochure will enable you to get a closer idea of the shades than viewing it via the website. All our screens have slightly varying colour settings whereas, with the brochure, we’re all seeing the same thing. Having said that, computer generated swatches are notoriously hard to get precisely right. This is where real life colour swatches are so important! I searched the internet for some swatches but I couldn’t find any so I took a chance and ordered Shell.

The current price (at time of writing this post) is reduced from £10 to £6 which I why I took a chance with it. It’s not the cheapest around but it’s by no means the most expensive! Considering I generally use Laura Mercier Mineral Powder Foundation as £30 a pop, this isn’t bad.

It comes with a sponge that is housed in the little compartment under the product, personally, I’m buffing this in the a synthetic flat top kabuki brush. I’d recommend the Sigma Flat Top F80 brush. (if you want to see it, click on the Sigma icon I have on the left hand side of my blog). I took a small amount on the brush, gently stippled onto my cheek and then swept the brush in circular motions to blend in. The application is absolutely lovely. It dries to a silky matte finish almost instantly and the coverage, for me is perfect. It’s just enough to smooth out uneven tones but not so full coverage that it leaves the skin too monotone. This is using the brush, I expect the sponge would give you a fuller finish but I’m not a fan of full coverage at all.

The colour tone I picked for myself is actually pretty good! I’m still a tad darker on my body than my face as I’m still a tiny bit tanned from my holiday. I do need to use a bronzer afterwards on top to add warmth but within a few weeks I imagine the colour will be perfect.

My only problem with this is that I am ending up as a total oily mess half way through the day. I have since tried it with another layer of powder on top to set it. This sort of defeats the point of a cream-to-powder but in certain situations, needs must. This extra layer helped but it’s still clearly too creamy for my skin right now.

So, sadly, I’m going to put this in a drawer and give it another go come Autumn/Winter when my skin stops acting like it’s 13 years old.

But, if you’re lucky enough to have relatively normal skin, give this a go. The powdery finish may not be great if you’re skin is dry or flaky.

I hope this has been helpful

Yours, as ever
